S.D. Warren Company : research collection, 1974-1975.

Material gathered by Butler in preparation for writing an article on S.D. Warren's revolutionary treatment of his workers. S.D. Warren, in addition to owning the paper mill in Westbrook, Maine, was an early proponent of humane treatment for his workers. He built for his workers, safe, affordable housing, a library, schools and public meeting areas. His ideas were so revolutionary for their time, he was asked to testify before Congress. His generous nature meant he was well-liked by all his workers and his death was truly mourned.
